Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Fighters Group

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a colorful mix of heroes, and a thrilling plot featuring angels, evil spirits, and malevolent powers increasing in strength within the urban setting.

Warning: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and presented the initial group of heroes who will split off from the central cast to begin their own adventure, separate from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

Dividing the Cast

Considering a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that maintaining everyone at one table would be unworkable.

That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, connecting the characters’ stories before branching into three smaller tables: Warriors, Strategists, and Seekers.

What Defines the Combat Party

Per the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the actions of episode 3 make it clear why these five characters are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the team knows exactly where to head next after a intense initial meeting with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose death initiated the story’s plot—exploited the foes for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, assaulting the rogue, and taking all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The antagonist then settled his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, north of the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each character has a personal reason to depart the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a hostile location.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his family’s wishes to execute the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their status as important members in the influential clan could help the team access areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, Teor swore a eternal obligation to The cleric for his rescue and will now follow him wherever.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are sought by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and Wicander turned against the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This leaves them no alternative but to head to Timmony in pursuit of the traitor.

What’s Next?

Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party will not appear the following episode, leaving the rest of the cast members to form the Seekers and Strategists groups.

Viewers can look forward to discovering which players will be assigned to which table in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on next week.
