A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
